Concrete Canoe Sub-Teams

This year, our canoe team is splitting into five sub-teams to maximize our results and make it easier to get involved in the things you're interested in. Each team will hold weekly meetings. If you aren't sure which team(s) to join, come out to some of our meetings to see what you like the most. No experience is required to join any of the teams!

Aesthetics – Mondays at 5:15pm, KAP lobby, second meeting next week

The aesthetics team is in charge of picking a theme, colors, the canoe's graphic design, the canoe stands, the canoe display board and paper graphics, shirts, and everything else design-oriented. Perfect for building science majors and anyone else interested in design!

Structures – Mondays at 6:30pm, location TBA, first meeting next week

The structures team is responsible for developing the shape of the canoe's hull and performing structural analysis to determine the minimum concrete strength and the weak points in the canoe.

Construction – Thursdays at 4pm, KAP Lobby, first meeting next week

The construction team is in charge of developing and testing canoe construction methods to ensure the highest possible workmanship and build quality.

Mix Design – Friday 2pm KAP lobby, first meeting this week

The mix design team creates a concrete mix design (ratio of all of the different materials) that is as light, strong, and workable as possible. Each week we'll compression-strength-test the previous mix design, make adjustments, and create another batch of concrete with the new mix.

Paddling – Sundays 9:30 AM in front of KAP, first meeting this Sunday

Every Sunday, we carpool to Newport Bay Aquatic Center where we practice paddling real canoes in preparation for the racing component of our concrete canoe competition. We'll stop at In-n-Out Burger on the way back and return to campus by around 12:30.

If you want to join the general canoe mailing list, email us at and we'll make sure you get our more detailed updates.

Steel Bridge Updates

Thank you for everyone who came out to our informational meetings last week, it was great to see all of your interests in helping out with this years steel bridge. In our first session we went of measuring, cutting, and grinding and in the second session we went over welding. We will continue throughout the year to work on our skills so don't worry if you felt like you didn't master it the first time.

Our next meeting time will be next Wednesday (10/2) 5-5:30pm and Friday (10/4) 12-12:30pm, and we will be discussing our bridge design. Please come with any questions or ideas you may have. Or if you wanted to practice or didn't come to the information sessions, we will be having brief sessions afterwards to practice and be accustomed to the machines. Hope to see you then.

If you're interested in getting involved with steel bridge, email us at and we'll add you to the bridge mailing list.
