USC Village Job Walk

Date: Friday, February 5th, 2016
Time: 3:00pm (design team meetings will end early on this day)
Location: USC Village, across the street from campus, details to be provided
RSVP: Required, link to be provided in next week's newsletter
We will be continuing our Industry Series with a job walk at the USC Village project. The 15-acre jobsite is the largest in South LA, with 6 buildings under construction concurrently and a $700 million budget. Project Engineers from Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction will provide a tour of the site, including the opportunity to go inside the buildings to see the residential interiors and future retail spaces. Whether you're interested in construction management, civil or structural engineering, or other related topics, this is an impeccable opportunity to see the execution of a landmark project right here at USC.
Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP when the link is sent next week. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required; please bring hard hats and vests if you have them, otherwise they will be provided. To maximize this opportunity, it is strongly recommended that attendees do some research on the project before the job walk. In addition to online resources, USC ASCE has several construction plan sets for USC Village that were donated by Hathaway Dinwiddie that are available for members to browse upon request (contact Nick Halsey at or find him in the KAP basement during canoe meetings to get access). Check out the latest drone flyover video and get excited:!

ASCE Scholarships

Los Angeles area ASCE groups are offering $24,000 in scholarships this year, and multiple students from USC receive scholarships most years. Awards will be announced at the annual YMF Student Night and Job Fair in March. The various scholarship applications were sent via email on 12/23/15 and are also available at the website:

The awards range from $1000-$5000, the application is really straightforward (at most, a short essay or recorded video interview thing is required). If you for some reason require more persuasion, they traditionally have a shortage of applicants, and last year, only five people applied for two of their $2500 scholarships. That's a 40% raw chance. That's absurd.

ASCE scholarship applications are due by the end of FRIDAY, January 15, 2016. Applications will also be accepted through January 29, 2016 (final deadline), but will be deducted points during scoring of the application. Note that most applications require a signature from our faculty advisor, Professor Brandow (, so plan ahead.

LADWP Student Engineer Program - Summer 2016 Internships

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2016 Student Engineer Program (SEP).

The goal of the SEP is to provide college engineering students with an exceptional hob training opportunity, including career mentoring, theoretical and technical instruction, and complete project-related, infrastructure work tasks. Student Engineers will be paired with LADWP engineers and work in technical teams within the Water, Power, and Joint systems of the organization.

The LADWP internship application is due on January 22, 2016, with successful applicant notifications in late February and work assignments to commence at the conclusion of the academic year.  More information can be found on their website

This is a paid opportunity with one of the largest civil engineering employers in Southern California - we highly recommend applying!
