USC ASCE Newsletter for February 10, 2016

USC ASCE's 3rd general meeting is on Tuesday, February 16th at 6:30 PM in KAP 165. Food will be provided! See below for more details.

If you are interested in attending a student Night and Job Fair with ASCE LA YMF, the event is on Friday March 4th, and the registration deadline is February 19th.

We are having the first social event of this year on Friday. Come hang out with us, have dinner, and play games. For time and location see below.

If you are interested in a position on the E-Board next year, you can start attending the E-Board meetings this semester to get more familiar with the positions. See below for more information.

The design teams are meeting this week. We will have Surveying practices from next week as well. See below for design team meeting schedules.

Also, Thank you to everyone who showed up to the pour day and helped.

If you haven't payed your membership, or PSWC dues yet, please make sure you do it this week.

The membership form is available here!  Dues are $30. You can submit the membership dues to our mailbox in KAP 213, to our treasurer Jason Loui, your design team captains or at an upcoming meeting.

USC ASCE: 3rd General Meeting

Join us for a chapter update, a report from the trip to Alaska for WSCL, an opportunity to purchase the iconic "don't worry, we're civil" ASCE t-shirts, and a special guest speaker, Jacquiline Patterson, of J.L. Pattersion & Associates, which recently merged with Jacobs. Come to learn about how she built her company from the ground up and the work they do in rail engineering. And of course, free food will be provided!


ASCE LA YMF Student Night and Job Fair

Date: Friday, March 4th, 2016
Time: 2pm-5pm Job Fair, 5pm-6pm 
Cost: $20
Venue: LA Hotel Downtown (333 S. Figueroa St.) - we will coordinate rides from USC together

Register online at by February 26! After February 19, the student registration price will rise from $20 to $30.
Featuring companies and firms across the metropolitan area and students from 11 local universities, SNJF is the premier event for student job opportunities and recognizing student accomplishments through awards and scholarships. Multiple USC ASCE members have gotten internships and full-time jobs out of this event. Additionally, the admin  scholarships will be announced at the dinner. Come to support your fellow Trojans and network with other students and professionals in the Los Angeles region!


ASCE Los Angeles Engineers Week: Elementary School Day 

When: Tuesday, February 23, 2016, 10a-2p

Where: Los Angeles City Hall

Come volunteer at E-week's Elementary School Day! You'll get a chance to interact with elementary school kids while to leading a tour through City Hall or guiding them through a hands-on activity. Share your experiences and show kids the possibilities of pursuing a career in engineering!
Lunch will be provided and you'll get an e-week t-shirt - sign up at the link below!


ASCE LA YMF Drought Presentation 

When: Tue, Feb. 23rd, 2016, 6 PM-8 PM

Celebrate Engineer's Week 2016 and join LA YMF for a technical presentation from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Metropolitan Water Department, MWH Global and California's Regional Water Quality Control Board, as they discuss the future of California's drought. Come find out what some of California's public agencies have done to mitigate the impacts and help with this issue. In addition, there will be a chance to network with professionals an hour prior to the presentation.

USC ASCE E-Board Meetings

Every Wednesday at 8AM, KAP 209
E-Board meetings are open to all USC ASCE members for the spring semester. Join us if you're interested in helping out or running for an elected position for next year. Breakfast is provided!


Steel Bridge Meeting

Monday: 4-6 PM
Thursday: 5-7 PM

We're continuing to fabricate our bridge, so come out and help us if you're free! 


Concrete Canoe

Tuesday: 5-7pm

Friday: 2-5 PM

This week, we'll be working on preparing the section and starting to sand the interior of the canoe!

This Friday we are going to work on the design and figure out what we need to buy for construction.

This semester we will be having surveying meetings to get familiar with using the total station. The meetings will involve learning how to set up the total station and how to work with it to measure distances and elevation and other cool things.

FE Preparation Course ( CE-495)

This spring semester, The Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is offering a 1-unit CE-495: Seminar in Civil Engineering which will be focused on reviewing the topics covered on the Fundamentals of Engineering exam with an emphasis in surveying. The course will be held on Fridays from 2 - 2:50pm in KAP 165. Please see the attached syllabus for more information.
