USC ASCE Newsletter for September 11, 2016

Hi ,

Thank you for coming out to our first General Meeting last Thursday. More information and links to signing up for events are provided below in the newsletter. If you missed it, we will have an event recap on the next newsletter.

We are going to have a "Resume Review/ Mock Interview" session with Los Angeles Younger Member Forum (LA YMF) on Thursday September 22nd at 7PM in KAP209. This is a great opportunity to get prepared for the career fair in a few weeks. Make sure you send us your resumes by Wednesday September 14th, in order to be considered for a resume review/ Mock interview.

We are also having our "Big Buddy Mixer" on September 15th at 6:30PM.

Free Headshots for all ASCE members on Sunday September 18th, at 3PM in E-Quad.

Our first Social Event of the year is our annual hike. This year we are going to Los Liones on September 25th. See you all at 9AM in front of KAP. Make sure you sign up in the google form provided below in the newsletter.

Design teams are having their first meeting this week. See below for more details and fill out the forms.

Join out Intramural Basketball team. Practices on Sundays at 2 or 3PM.

Career Series: Resume Review/ Mock Interview

Date: Thursday September 22nd (Note: Resumes due on September 14th)

Time: 7PM

The ASCE's Los Angeles Younger Member Forum (LA YMF) is coming to USC to prepare you for the upcoming career fair in October. We are accepting resumes from student by September 14th. You can email your resumes to, and get a feedback on September 22nd, along with an opportunity for a Mock Interview by LA YMF expert.


Big Buddy Mixer

Date: Thursday, September 15th

Time: 6:30 PM

Location: KAP 209

Join us THIS THURSDAY if you're interested in becoming or having a big buddy on Thursday, September 15th at 6:30pm in KAP 209! Freshmen, new sophomore members, and new transfer students will be paired with an upperclassman in ASCE who can give advice on everything from the best CE professors to where to find the best food on campus. There will be games and ice cream provided! Sign up on our interest form here if you would like to participate in the program:


Free Headshots

Hey everyone! Headshots will be held next Sunday, September 18th starting at 3pm. Meet in the Viterbi Quad, and we’ll go from there!


Social Events: Hike

sign up for our annual back to school hike on Sunday, September 25th! This year we will be doing the Los Liones hike in Malibu. It is about 6 miles round trip of moderate hiking, but the view at the top is amazing!!! We will plan on leaving around 9:00am and should be back around 1:30pm. Everyone should pack food for snacks and plenty of water. (Timing/trail is tentative based on weather!!) Sign up here by September 21st :


Concrete Canoe

Do you love canoes, concrete, or friendship? Yes?! Then join us at the first meeting for the Concrete Canoe team this Thursday, 9/15 at 4:30 PM! We’ll be giving an overview for the upcoming canoe season and the various ways you can get involved. Please meet in the KAP lobby.

First Environmental Design Team meeting

Date: Monday, September 19th

Time: 3:30-4:30 PM

SAVE THE DATE- Come join us for the first ASCE Environmental Design Team meeting of the school year! This is our chance to meet/ catch up with everyone, give a quick intro of our team (what we do, timeline, etc), nail down meeting times, and brainstorm activities we want to do this semester. Get your afternoon snack, chill, and learn what we're all about!

Steel bridge

Date: Wednesday, September 14th

Location: KAP lounge (second floor)

Are you interested in visiting the Golden Gate Bridge? Brooklyn bridge? London Tower Bridge? Too bad midterms are coming up and you won't have enough time to :-) Join us for the next best thing: building our very own steel bridge and competing with other schools across the west coast! Not only will you learn the process of designing a bridge, but also how to weld, cut, and work with steel!Our first informational session will be held this Wednesday 9/14 at 4:30 PM. Meet in the second floor KAP lounge adjacent to the stairs for a short meeting on how you can get involved. Can't wait to see all of your shining faces.

Greenbuild Conference and Expo

The Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, to be held October 5-7 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, is the premier event for sustainable building. This event features three exhilarating days of uplifting speakers, unmatched networking opportunities, showcases, LEED workshops, and tours of green buildings in Los Angeles. Greenbuild offers a place for thousands to gather and renew their commitment to the green movement.

They looking to recruit students and young professionals with backgrounds in Architecture, Civil/Structural Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, and Sustainability to help on various volunteer tasks at the event. Each volunteer will be appointed a task that will require a minimum of 8 hours and will receive a complementary pass to the event (a $600 value). It will be an exciting learning and networking opportunity for everyone interested in the future of sustainable building .Follow the link below for more information on how to apply for a volunteer position.


MPP Complimentary Luncheon/AE Conference

Morris Politch and Purdy is putting on a complementary luncheon on September 13.

The luncheon will feature speakers such as the State Architect, leaders in the seismic design world, and the winners of the SpaceX Hyperloop competition from MIT. It will be a half day event downtown at the LA Athletic Club from the morning through lunch on September 13.
