Job Site Visit

Date: Thursday, Sept. 25
Time: 8:15 AM
Location: in front of KAP

This upcoming Friday 9/25 marks the date of our first job site visit this semester. Please join USC ASCE in visiting Walsh Shea Corridor Constructors and the Crenshaw/LAX Light Rail Transit. With a $2.058 billion budget, the project is an ambitious 8.5-mile light rail traveling through the Crenshaw, Inglewood, and Westchester neighbors at underground, at-grade, and aerial levels. The line will feature 8 stations serving the community and linking the Metro Expo Line and Green Line. The majority of the work involves utility relocation and heavy construction , including tunnel boring machines to link underground portions.
We will be visiting the UG-1 excavation in Westchester along Aviation Blvd. Boots are advised (steel toe not necessary as tunnel safety order is not yet in effect). If you have your own PPE, please bring it, but additional PPE will be provided. Please fill out the RSVP form:

Environmental Design team First Meeting

Date: Friday September 25th

Time: 11:00 AM

Location: KAP Lobby

First things: We'll be kicking off the year with our first Environmental Design Team meeting next Friday, Sept 25, at 11:00 am in the lobby of KAP. Please be on time so that we can find a classroom together! (USC has this new thing where groups can't book classrooms until after 6:30 pm)

Secondly, as mentioned during the first ASCE General Meeting (if you were there), the Env Design Team does not receive its prompt for the PSWC competition until 2016. That means 2 main things:

• You have much more time this semester! REALLY good news if you're still getting into (or getting back into) the swing of college/ school/ research/ jobs, etc. We will not be meeting as regularly this semester, but we WILL be putting on events/ doing smaller projects to your benefit.

• We get a whole semester's worth of "blank space" (cue Taylor Swift) to work on projects that YOU would be interested in doing! This leads us to your assignment for the meeting...

which is to bring ideas. Brainstorm what you might want to see happen this semester, and Luyue and I will do our best to make it happen. It could be inviting industry professionals in to talk about their experiences in Environmental Engineering. It could be working with the USC community garden, or having documentary screenings.

Finally, let us know ( if you can't make it to the meeting, and don't stress! We'll send out recaps/ updates afterward, and you can always email in your suggestions.

Internship Panel / Blaze Fundraiser!

Internship Panel / Blaze Fundraiser!

Last night USC ASCE hosted an internship panel! Panelists had a wide variety of internships in construction, structural, and environmental. Questions that were covered included the application process, typical interview questions, how to talk to recruiters, and what your resume should look like! It was very helpful and informative, especially for freshmen who have never been a career fair.

Then, we headed over to Blaze Pizza to raise some money for our club. Of course the pizza was delicious, and it was a great way to hang out and get to know each other better!

Additional Opportunities

The ASCE LA Section is having The Path Forward event on October 2, 2015. Quite distinguished speakers are lined up. Please see the attached flyer for more information, and I encourage you to register early.
