For our final general meeting of the year, we recapped our third-place three-peat at PSWC 2016, announced the 2016-17 Executive Board, and presented the annual USC ASCE Awards. We finished with an opportunity for everyone to sign the seniors’ hard hats, a USC CEE department tradition. It was a great end to the year with food, fun, and friendship!
That's a wrap! Awards have been given, 2016-2017 positions initiated, and seniors sent off! Can't wait for the fall! pic.twitter.com/Xdx1gA8ETT
This past Thursday, USC ASCE hosted a general meeting with a special guest: Alan Hanson from Simpson Strong Tie! Alan gave us a brief history and background of the company, and also discussed various scholarship opportunities for juniors and seniors. We’re looking forward to the upcoming tour of Simpson Strong Tie!
After the presentation, we held officer elections for four executive board positions for next year: president, vice president, treasurer, and one of the sponsorship/conference co-chairs. The members in attendance were able to hear a bit from each candidate, and voting commenced. It was really great to hear everyone’s plans for next year, and so far, it looks like we’re going to have a really awesome executive board!
The meeting then closed out with an exciting game of Jeopardy! Members were split into three teams: the cows, ducks, and dogs (with buzzer sounds of moos, quacks, and woofs, respectively), and answered questions about USC, ASCE, Simpson Strong Tie, Engineering, and Construction. The game was extremely close, but the cows ended up winning it all with a risky wager in Final Jeopardy. All in all, it was a really informative and fun meeting, that hopefully gave everyone a little bit of a break as we gear up for PSWC!
On Tuesday, February 16th, USC ASCE held our third general meeting for the 2015-2016 academic school year. We welcomed special guest speaker Chris Norton from Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, who shared his experiences working on a variety of projects across the country – including the upcoming USC Village across the street from campus. Chris is a familiar face around USC, being an alumnus who is still involved with the Trojan Marching Band. We hope to see him around soon!
While enjoying delicious Thai food catered by T.G. Express, everyone was able to hear trip reports from WSCL in Alaska as well as updates from all the design captains. With PSWC inching closer and closer, it is great to see all the hard work paying off in visible progress. At the end of the meeting, we previewed our upcoming promotional video for our new YouTube channel! Those who stayed afterwards were able to play a game of massive Jenga, taking structural engineering to new heights.
This past Thursday, September 22nd marked USC ASCE’s second general meeting for the school year. Food was catered by Chick-Fil-A, featuring yummy chicken strips, chicken salad, and fruit salad for everyone to enjoy. The meeting highlighted several of our recent past events, including a plan reading workshop, internship panel, job walk, resume workshop, and meeting with ASCE Region 9 Director Jay Higgins. The eight representatives who attended the ASCE 2015 Convention in New York City were also able to share their experiences with other members.
Details for the 2016 Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) were revealed to the general membership. Design team captains gave updates on their progress, and the PSWC coordinators introduced the official list of secondary competitions. The general USC ASCE t-shirts for 2015-2016, which will be worn at PSWC 2016, was debuted to the membership. The front of the shirt features the new USC ASCE logo, while the back of the shirt features a cityscape graphic with the motto “bridging the gap between engineering and friendship.”
On September 3rd, we hosted our first general meeting for the new 2015-2016 school year in Kaprielian Hall. Along with socializing and delicious Thai food catered by TG Express, our executive board presented USC ASCE to the old and new students who were interested in our endeavors this year. We welcomed potential new members with open arms, showcasing our accomplishments while not hesitating to show off our fun personalities around fellow civil engineering classmates. It was a successful and informative first meeting, and we hope to see more old and new faces at future events!
For new students and prospective members, welcome; for returning members, welcome back! We’re excited to announce that our first general meeting for 2015-16 has been set:
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2015
Location: KAP 146
This first meeting will be an opportunity to learn about our plans for the semester and the year, from a new professional event series and a new community service team to PSWC 2016 and our four major design teams. For new prospective members, this is an opportunity to meet other members and learn more about our organization. We have tons of exciting things planned for this year and we’d love to have your help.
As always, we’ll have free food (type TBA), along with fun and friendship. We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!
Thank you for attending USC ASCE’s first general meeting! Our executive board enjoyed getting to know everyone and sharing information about our organization.
If you couldn’t attend our first general meeting, you can still get involved with USC ASCE! Please visit our membership page at http://uscasce.com/membership/ and complete the linked form. Dues for the 2014-2015 semester are $30. Our next general meeting isn’t until mid-October, but you can still contact our design teams to learn more about getting involved. You can contact the Concrete Canoe team at email@example.com and the Streel Bridge team at firstname.lastname@example.org
Our paper, pencil, and tape bridge-building competition was quite competitive. Our older members had a great time sharing their knowledge of structures while guiding freshmen to build the most successful bridge. This semester we really hope to establish a strong sense of community between all students in the civil engineering major at USC.
Thanks to everyone who joined us at our first meeting!
We had a great turnout, with 65+ students in attendance. I know several people wanted to attend but couldn’t, so you can use this post to catch up on what you missed. There are some useful links for those who were there too.
After the main portion of the meeting, where we explained what ASCE and USC ASCE are, as well as talking about all of the different things we do, we had a brief activity for those who could stay. The assignment: create the tallest possible tower out of six sheets of (re-used!) paper and nothing else (no tape, glue, paperclips, etc.). Oh, and they had to be wind-resistant too. We had some pretty creative results!
Someone requested that we post our presentation slides, so here they are (minus our special fonts) if you want to review what we went over or in case you missed the meeting!
Remember the slideshow of images we had playing before and after our presentation? It’s actually just a page on our website that make a slideshow of all of the pictures we’ve uploaded here. Check it out!
Don’t forget about our upcoming events: PSWC Info Sessions Thursday 9/12 from 5:30-6 or 6-6:30 or Friday 9/13 from 12-12:30 (all three cover the same information and focus on our design teams) and our First Guest Speaker Meeting Monday 9/16 from 6:30-8. Make sure you join our mailing list for updates!
